My Top 3 Lessons I've Learned About Selling for Top Dollar

Read Now

Successfully selling a high-end power boat encompasses a blend of precise pricing, compelling presentation, and adept communication. Over the years, through a myriad of transactions, I've crystallized three pivotal lessons that have propelled me to secure top dollar for the vessels I broker. Here they are:

  1. Understanding the Market is Key: Accurate pricing is a cornerstone in drawing serious buyers; it's one of, if not the first thing any potential buyer looks at. Sure, it's tempting to list your boat at a high price for "negotiation", but it's vital to remember that the listing price doesn't equate to the selling price. Thorough market research, encompassing not only current listings but also recently sold prices of similar models based of age, equipment, and condition is crucial. The boating market has seen a change post the COVID-19 surge, and overpriced listings have lost their allure. Rooting your pricing in solid market research is essential to catch the right buyers' attention and garner earnest offers.
  2. Presentation Matters, A Lot: The presentation of your boat is a silent yet powerful communicator to potential buyers. As a colleague of mine likes to put it, "imagine you are putting the boat on display at a boat show, now make it look that way." This involves cleaning and/or detailing the boat, decluttering, addressing repairs, and removing personal items. Cleaning out the bilge, hatches, and hatch gutters, as well as ensuring upholstery is clean are part of this preparatory phase. The aim is to showcase a well-cared-for boat that's ready for the new owner. You know how great your boat is, but any potential buyer is going to look for imperfections. Minimize these objections to increase value. But presentation extends beyond the physical state of the boat. A quality listing with accurate information is imperative. Awe-inspiring photography covering all areas of the boat not only captivates potential buyers but also provides a clear picture of what they are investing in. Additionally, marketing on the right platforms to reach qualified buyers is part of this narrative. It's about presenting and positioning your boat in a manner that resonates with the right audience, and this is where a seasoned broker can add immense value.
  3. Effective Communication is Your Best Mate: Timely, clear, and friendly communication is integral in keeping potential buyers engaged. Responding to inquiries in a manner that is both informative and welcoming is essential. Following up promptly after an inquiry or viewing can rekindle interest and provide an opportunity to address any lingering doubts or concerns. Effective communication not only enhances the buyer's experience but also propels the sale process forward, which is key for a swift and profitable sale. A seasoned broker can play a pivotal role in managing communication, bridging any gaps between you and potential buyers, and navigating the sale towards a successful conclusion.

Navigating the complexities of selling a high-end power boat requires a well-rounded approach, blending accurate pricing, compelling presentation, and adept communication. While these lessons serve as a solid foundation, having a seasoned broker by your side can significantly streamline the process, ensuring a swift and profitable sale.

If you're looking to sell your boat and desire a seamless, rewarding experience, don't sail solo. I'm here to guide you through each phase, ensuring your boat is presented and positioned to fetch top dollar in the market. Reach out today, and let's set the course for a successful sale. Your rewarding selling experience is just a call or a message away.

TOP THREE WAYS TO GET top dollar for your boat

Picture

Selling your boat for top dollar can be a stressful and daunting process, but there are a few things you can do to make sure you get the most money possible. Here are three things to consider when trying to maximize the value of your boat.

  1. CLEAN SELLS! A clean boat is essential to getting the best price when selling. In my opinion, you will get more value in keeping your boat clean than you will with equipment upgrades. However, this means more than just a quick wipe down - you'll want to give your boat a thorough cleaning, both inside and out. This includes washing the exterior, scrubbing the decks, and wiping down the interior. Pay special attention to areas that may be overlooked, such as the bilge and storage compartments, hatch gutters and cleaning out the refrigerator of those old ketchup packets you never use. Also remove your personal equipment and de clutter the boat, A clean boat will show potential buyers that you've taken good care of your boat and that it's worth the asking price. Imagine your boat is going into a boat show - because that is how it will be viewed.
  2. Maintenance and Records: Keeping accurate and up-to-date records is crucial when selling your boat for top dollar. This includes maintenance, repairs, services, upgrades and any other relevant paperwork. The more a potential buyer knows about the history of your boat and any work that has been done on it, the less speculation they will have on what they will need to invest for the 'unknowns' as they start  mentally subtracting from the value they see. Also remember to have invoices and receipts, these are items that can prove work was done by a professional, which will also ease any concerns of a prospect. By keeping detailed records, you can provide buyers with a sense of confidence and trust, which can ultimately help you get the most money possible.
  3. Hire a Professional: Another way to maximize the value of your boat is by hiring a professional yacht broker, specifically someone who does this as their full time career and not a part time 'side gig'. A yacht broker is an expert in boat sales and can help you navigate the complex process of selling your boat. An experienced broker can provide valuable insights into the market about your boat and the competition, help you set the optimal price, and procure an attractive listing and avertise it to qualified, prospective buyers. Additionally, a yacht broker can help take some of the stress and responsibility off your shoulders, allowing you to focus on other things while they handle the sale of your boat.

In conclusion, getting the most money when selling your boat comes down to a few key factors: keeping your boat clean, maintaining accurate records, and hiring a professional. By focusing on these three areas, you'll be well on your way to maximizing the value of your boat and achieving a successful sale.

BOATING SAFETY: TIPS TO STAY SAFE OUT ON THE WATER

Picture
Boating is a fun and exciting way to enjoy the water with family and friends, but it's important to prioritize safety to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Whether you're a seasoned boater or new to the water, here are some important boating safety tips to keep in mind:

1. Follow the Rules: This may sound cliche, but it really is important to know the local rules and regulations of your boating area and follow them to ensure a safe and legal boating experience. For example, being able to read channel markers will help keep you from running aground, or knowing how to pass another vessel will avoid collisions. Boating rules and regulations vary by state and can include speed limits, navigation rules, and other safety requirements. You can find information about boating laws and regulations in your area by contacting your local boating agency or visiting their website.

2. Check the Weather: Before you head out on the water, check the weather forecast to ensure that conditions are safe for boating. Avoid boating in high winds, thunderstorms, or other dangerous weather conditions. If you're already on the water and conditions worsen, head back to shore immediately. Another aspect of the weather is checking the tides and planning accordingly. If you are exploring new areas, try not to venture out on a falling tide. Rather, choose a rising tide this way if you discover yourself in shallow water, the tide is on your side and will continue to get deeper.

3. Don't Drink and Boat: this should go without saying, but just like driving a car, boating under the influence of drugs or alcohol is dangerous and illegal. The effects of alcohol can be magnified on the water due to sun, wind, and waves. It's important to designate a sober driver and to avoid alcohol and drugs while boating.

4. Maintain Your Boat: Regular maintenance of your boat can help prevent accidents and breakdowns. Make sure that all safety equipment is in good working order, and have your boat serviced regularly to ensure that it's in top working condition. Before every use you should check all systems and if you know something is broken, address it before your next outing. Remember, unlike a car you cannot just park and walk home if there is a breakdown. Being out on the water is great way to get 'away', but have false confidence assuming someone is right around the corner to save you.

5. Life Preservers: If you're planning to make boating or being out on the water a regular activity in your life, the best practice is to wear a life preserver, of PFD, everytime you are on the open water. Invest in a USCG approved PFD and make sure it fits correctly. Another good practice in combination with wearing a life preserver is taking swimming lessons to build your skills. Remember, every occupant requires a correct fitting, USCG approved PFD to be on board. Some jurisdictions or vessels may require additional items as well, so check with your local regulations before heading out for your next adventure.

Conclusion

By following these boating safety tips, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the water. Remember to always wear a life jacket, follow boating rules and regulations, check the weather forecast, avoid alcohol and drugs, maintain your boat, and wear your life preserver. With these safety tips in mind, you can enjoy all that boating has to offer while staying safe and responsible.

TIPS FOR BUYING A USED BOAT

Read Now

Picture
As a yacht broker, I have seen firsthand the potential pitfalls of purchasing a used boat. All too often I meet boat owners who thought they had scored an amazing deal, just to figure out later on the 'deal' cost them more than they had bargained for. While there are certainly many great deals to be had on pre-owned vessels, it's important for buyers to do their due diligence and take the time to ensure that they are making a wise investment. Here are some tips that I often share with my clients who are considering purchasing a used boat:

Get a Written Agreement: Once you have reached an agreement on price, be sure to get a written agreement that outlines the terms of the sale. This should include details of the specific boat like hull ID number, engine serial numbers, any warranties or guarantees, and any other relevant information such as closing dates, deposits, and who the buying and selling parties are. A 'Handshake Agreement' is not advised, when there is an absence of a written contract, it can be difficult to determine what was agreed upon if there is any disagreement or dispute. This lack of clarity can lead to confusion and potentially costly legal battles.

Ask for Maintenance Records: A well-maintained boat is more likely to be reliable and free of hidden problems. Ask the seller about the boat's history of maintenance and repairs. Remember, invoices and receipts are vital to proving the history, and should be the only real proof for items that cannot be easily observed with the naked eye.

Get a Professional Inspection: A professional boat surveyor can provide an objective assessment of the boat's condition, highlighting any potential problems or areas that require attention. Be sure to hire an accredited surveyor who has experience with the type of boat you are considering. Also be sure to include an out of water inspection where the surveyor can check the hull sides and bottom for any potential issues of delamination, or other structural issues. Inspecting the running gear prior to purchasing allows the opportunity to confirm the vessel is in a safe condition to head out on the water, which leads me to my next tip

Take a Sea Trial: A sea trial is an opportunity to test the boat's performance and handling in a real-world environment. Be sure to take the boat out in safe conditions and confirm the proper safety gear is on board. During the sea trial be observant of any irregularities, like excessive vibration or odd noises. When in a safe scenario, ask to see Wide Open Throttle RPM in order to confirm it is within engine manufacturer's suggested range, and know this information prior to leaving the dock. although it is not 100% fool proof, if it is operating within the correct range, most likely the boat is propped correctly and the powerhead is operating as intended, if there is any issues here at all and you are still interested, hire a mechanic to determine the issue and discuss options to fix. While it is important to be near the helm to see RPM, speeds and fuel burns, go ahead and spend some time as a passenger so you can see the boat from your potential guests eyes. It is very exciting to sea trial, but don't let your emotions get ahead of you.

Work with a Professional: Specifically someone who does this as their full time career and not a part time 'side gig'. A yacht broker is an expert in boat sales and can help you navigate the complex process of searching for and purchasing your next vessel. Additionally, a yacht broker can help take some of the stress and responsibility off your shoulders, allowing you to focus on other things while they handle the process from arranging inspections, verifying records, procuring contracts, and offering insight on potential concerns.

By following these tips, buyers can minimize their risks and ensure that they are making a smart investment in a used boat. Working with a reputable yacht broker will provide additional guidance and support throughout the buying process.

WHY USE A YACHT BROKER?

Read Now

As a yacht broker, I'm often asked why it's important to use a broker when buying or selling a yacht. Here are just a few reasons why working with a yacht broker can be incredibly beneficial:

  1. Expertise and Knowledge: When you are considering working with a yacht broker, more times than not you are looking to benefit from their expertise and knowledge. So when looking for a good candidate, they will have experience with the buying and selling process, as well as an in-depth understanding of the industry. They can help you navigate the complex world of yacht ownership, answer any questions you may have or atleast know where to get the answer, and provide valuable insights and advice. They can also help you understand the different types of yachts available, why the values differ, from brand to brand, sizes or years, and which one may be best suited to your needs.
  2. Access to Listings: Similar to a realtor, a professional Yacht broker will have a membership of a multiple listing service and have access to a wide range of yacht listings and sold data that is not always publicly available. This additional access includes time on the market, price changes, and final 'sold' prices. Knowledgeable brokers will research the market to determine the fair market value of a yacht, so you can make an informed decision when purchasing or selling.
  3. Negotiation Skills: According to a survey conducted by CreditDonkey, only 12% of Americans have ever negotiated the price of a car. While this survey is specifically about car purchases, it does suggest that negotiating may not be a common practice for many Americans. If you are not comfortable negotiating on your own, working with a professional such as a yacht broker can be a great way to ensure that your interests are represented and that you get the most value for your money. Emotions can occasionally get in the way of closing a deal, Yacht brokers can provide a level of emotional detachment that can be beneficial in the negotiation process. They can approach negotiations with a clear head and an objective perspective, which can help them make strategic decisions and avoid getting caught up in the heat of the moment.
  4. Industry Connections: Yacht brokers often have established relationships with other industry professionals, including surveyors, insurance providers, and financing companies. They can help connect you with the right people to make the purchasing process smoother and more efficient. Additionally, if you need maintenance or repairs on your yacht, brokers can recommend trusted service providers to keep your vessel in top condition. Furthermore, these industry connections pay dividends when your broker is able to gather local, or unpublished knowledge to help resolve concerns or issues, both pre and post purchase
  5. Peace of Mind: Perhaps most importantly, working with a yacht broker can give you peace of mind. You'll have an experienced professional on your side throughout the entire process, ensuring that everything goes smoothly and that you're making informed decisions. A top tier brokerage firm will have a dedicated team of individuals that navigate the legal and financial aspects of the transaction, such as contracts, escrow, and financing. This allows you the comfort of knowing  all necessary paperwork is completed for successful transfer of ownership, clearing liens, as well as filing any forms or taxes to correct agencies. In addition, knowing your deposit is safe and that any incoming funds are legitimate. This can be especially valuable if you're new to yacht ownership or if you're dealing with a complex transaction.

In conclusion, using a yacht broker when buying or selling a yacht can be incredibly beneficial. From their expertise and knowledge to their access to listings, negotiation skills, industry connections, and peace of mind, a yacht broker can help make the process smoother and more efficient.

If you're in the market for a yacht, or looking to sell your current vessel, consider working with Joe Papperman to ensure you get the best possible deal.

TOP 5 REASONS YOU SHOULD BUY A BOAT

Read Now

Picture
Buying a boat can be a significant investment, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. Here are the top 5 reasons why it's a good idea to buy a boat:

1. Enjoyment and relaxation: Owning a boat provides endless opportunities for fun and relaxation on the water. Whether you enjoy fishing, watersports, or simply cruising around, a boat can provide a peaceful escape from the stresses of daily life. If you have your own boat, you decide when, where and how long your adventure will be.

2. Quality time with family and friends: Boating is a great way to spend quality time with loved ones, creating lasting memories and to strengthen bonds. Some of my best memories as child were out on the intercoastal, salt spray in my hair and my family by my side.

3. Accessibility to new destinations: Owning a boat can give you access to new destinations that may not be accessible by land. You can explore secluded coves, hidden beaches, and other areas that are only accessible by water. Be cautious of local wildlife, and always leave the area better than you found it.

4. Sense of community: The boating community is a tight-knit group of individuals who share a passion for the water. Rather than trailering, consider renting a slip at a well ranked marina in your area, I am willing to bet you will end up with several new friends by the end of the season.

5. Environmental awareness: Many boaters have a deep appreciation for the environment and take steps to minimize their impact on the water. Owning a boat can provide an opportunity to see more of the wildlife in your area which will increase your awareness of the ecosystem.

Buying a boat can be a great idea for those who enjoy spending time on the water and want to experience the many benefits of boating. However, it is important to do your research and consider all aspects of ownership, including the cost, maintenance, and safety considerations, before making a purchase.
