Whether you're a seasoned boater or new to the water, here are some important boating safety tips to keep in mind: 1. Follow the Rules: This may sound cliche, but it really is important to know the local rules and regulations of your boating area and follow them to ensure a safe and legal boating experience. For example, being able to read channel markers will help keep you from running aground, or knowing how to pass another vessel will avoid collisions. Boating rules and regulations vary by state and can include speed limits, navigation rules, and other safety requirements. You can find information about boating laws and regulations in your area by contacting your local boating agency or visiting their website. 2. Check the Weather: Before you head out on the water, check the weather forecast to ensure that conditions are safe for boating. Avoid boating in high winds, thunderstorms, or other dangerous weather conditions. If you're already on the water and conditions worsen, head back to shore immediately. Another aspect of the weather is checking the tides and planning accordingly. If you are exploring new areas, try not to venture out on a falling tide. Rather, choose a rising tide this way if you discover yourself in shallow water, the tide is on your side and will continue to get deeper. 3. Don't Drink and Boat: this should go without saying, but just like driving a car, boating under the influence of drugs or alcohol is dangerous and illegal. The effects of alcohol can be magnified on the water due to sun, wind, and waves. It's important to designate a sober driver and to avoid alcohol and drugs while boating. 4. Maintain Your Boat: Regular maintenance of your boat can help prevent accidents and breakdowns. Make sure that all safety equipment is in good working order, and have your boat serviced regularly to ensure that it's in top working condition. Before every use you should check all systems and if you know something is broken, address it before your next outing. Remember, unlike a car you cannot just park and walk home if there is a breakdown. Being out on the water is great way to get 'away', but have false confidence assuming someone is right around the corner to save you. 5. Life Preservers: If you're planning to make boating or being out on the water a regular activity in your life, the best practice is to wear a life preserver, of PFD, everytime you are on the open water. Invest in a USCG approved PFD and make sure it fits correctly. Another good practice in combination with wearing a life preserver is taking swimming lessons to build your skills. Remember, every occupant requires a correct fitting, USCG approved PFD to be on board. Some jurisdictions or vessels may require additional items as well, so check with your local regulations before heading out for your next adventure. Conclusion By following these boating safety tips, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the water. Remember to always wear a life jacket, follow boating rules and regulations, check the weather forecast, avoid alcohol and drugs, maintain your boat, and wear your life preserver. With these safety tips in mind, you can enjoy all that boating has to offer while staying safe and responsible. As a yacht broker, I have seen firsthand the potential pitfalls of purchasing a used boat. All too often I meet boat owners who thought they had scored an amazing deal, just to figure out later on the 'deal' cost them more than they had bargained for. While there are certainly many great deals to be had on pre-owned vessels, it's important for buyers to do their due diligence and take the time to ensure that they are making a wise investment. Here are some tips that I often share with my clients who are considering purchasing a used boat: Get a Written Agreement: Once you have reached an agreement on price, be sure to get a written agreement that outlines the terms of the sale. This should include details of the specific boat like hull ID number, engine serial numbers, any warranties or guarantees, and any other relevant information such as closing dates, deposits, and who the buying and selling parties are. A 'Handshake Agreement' is not advised, when there is an absence of a written contract, it can be difficult to determine what was agreed upon if there is any disagreement or dispute. This lack of clarity can lead to confusion and potentially costly legal battles. Ask for Maintenance Records: A well-maintained boat is more likely to be reliable and free of hidden problems. Ask the seller about the boat's history of maintenance and repairs. Remember, invoices and receipts are vital to proving the history, and should be the only real proof for items that cannot be easily observed with the naked eye. Get a Professional Inspection: A professional boat surveyor can provide an objective assessment of the boat's condition, highlighting any potential problems or areas that require attention. Be sure to hire an accredited surveyor who has experience with the type of boat you are considering. Also be sure to include an out of water inspection where the surveyor can check the hull sides and bottom for any potential issues of delamination, or other structural issues. Inspecting the running gear prior to purchasing allows the opportunity to confirm the vessel is in a safe condition to head out on the water, which leads me to my next tip Take a Sea Trial: A sea trial is an opportunity to test the boat's performance and handling in a real-world environment. Be sure to take the boat out in safe conditions and confirm the proper safety gear is on board. During the sea trial be observant of any irregularities, like excessive vibration or odd noises. When in a safe scenario, ask to see Wide Open Throttle RPM in order to confirm it is within engine manufacturer's suggested range, and know this information prior to leaving the dock. although it is not 100% fool proof, if it is operating within the correct range, most likely the boat is propped correctly and the powerhead is operating as intended, if there is any issues here at all and you are still interested, hire a mechanic to determine the issue and discuss options to fix. While it is important to be near the helm to see RPM, speeds and fuel burns, go ahead and spend some time as a passenger so you can see the boat from your potential guests eyes. It is very exciting to sea trial, but don't let your emotions get ahead of you. Work with a Professional: Specifically someone who does this as their full time career and not a part time 'side gig'. A yacht broker is an expert in boat sales and can help you navigate the complex process of searching for and purchasing your next vessel. Additionally, a yacht broker can help take some of the stress and responsibility off your shoulders, allowing you to focus on other things while they handle the process from arranging inspections, verifying records, procuring contracts, and offering insight on potential concerns. By following these tips, buyers can minimize their risks and ensure that they are making a smart investment in a used boat. Working with a reputable yacht broker will provide additional guidance and support throughout the buying process. If you are interested in working with a professional on the sale of your boat, consider working with Joe Papperman. As a yacht broker, I'm often asked why it's important to use a broker when buying or selling a yacht. Here are just a few reasons why working with a yacht broker can be incredibly beneficial:
In conclusion, using a yacht broker when buying or selling a yacht can be incredibly beneficial. From their expertise and knowledge to their access to listings, negotiation skills, industry connections, and peace of mind, a yacht broker can help make the process smoother and more efficient. If you're in the market for a yacht, or looking to sell your current vessel, consider working with Joe Papperman to ensure you get the best possible deal. Buying a boat can be a significant investment, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. Here are the top 5 reasons why it's a good idea to buy a boat: 1. Enjoyment and relaxation: Owning a boat provides endless opportunities for fun and relaxation on the water. Whether you enjoy fishing, watersports, or simply cruising around, a boat can provide a peaceful escape from the stresses of daily life. If you have your own boat, you decide when, where and how long your adventure will be. 2. Quality time with family and friends: Boating is a great way to spend quality time with loved ones, creating lasting memories and to strengthen bonds. Some of my best memories as child were out on the intercoastal, salt spray in my hair and my family by my side. 3. Accessibility to new destinations: Owning a boat can give you access to new destinations that may not be accessible by land. You can explore secluded coves, hidden beaches, and other areas that are only accessible by water. Be cautious of local wildlife, and always leave the area better than you found it. 4. Sense of community: The boating community is a tight-knit group of individuals who share a passion for the water. Rather than trailering, consider renting a slip at a well ranked marina in your area, I am willing to bet you will end up with several new friends by the end of the season. 5. Environmental awareness: Many boaters have a deep appreciation for the environment and take steps to minimize their impact on the water. Owning a boat can provide an opportunity to see more of the wildlife in your area which will increase your awareness of the ecosystem. Buying a boat can be a great idea for those who enjoy spending time on the water and want to experience the many benefits of boating. However, it is important to do your research and consider all aspects of ownership, including the cost, maintenance, and safety considerations, before making a purchase. This 38-foot yacht is designed to meet the demands of serious anglers who are looking for a top-performing vessel that offers luxury and comfort, while still remaining affordable. The Viking 38 Billfish is spacious and well-appointed, with all of the same amenities you will find on any other Viking. Options include Joystick Maneuverability, Seakeeper, Ice Chipper, Water Maker, and of course plenty of refrigeration and Air Condonditing. The interior is finished with high-quality materials and exceptional attention to detail, providing a luxurious feel that is typical of Viking Yachts. One of the most notable aspects of the Viking 38 Billfish is the combined features of the open flybridge helm and the day boat style command deck area, which features a salon-like living area that includes a port-side dinette with table. A comfortable lounge to starboard also serves as rod storage. Both port and starboard seating will raise and lower on actuators to give access to mechanical space below. This design really shines when the optional second lower helm station is installed on the starboard side, which provides an operator immediate access to the cockpit. This gives the best of both words for an express vs convertible style helm. The 38 Billlfish is an excellent option for serious anglers who are looking for a high-quality sportfishing yacht that offers exceptional value, ease of service and comfort in a vessel under 40'.
